A former staff of the now defunct Hallmark Bank Plc. Olubiyi Odunaro has called off his 14 day hunger strike which he started out in protest of the non –payment of his terminal benefits.

The change of mind was spurred by the intervention of the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola. The Governor was represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Justice Sector Reforms Lanre Akinsola.
“As a responsible government we don’t want a dead casualty in our hands as a result of this protest. Once he ends this protest, we would first provide him medical service while the Lagos State Directorate of Citizens Rights would engage the authorities concerned in a comprehensive dialogue.” He said while visiting Odunaro at the tent he had turned into his home at Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Lagos. The Lagos state government also gave a verbal promise of free legal representation to other ex-workers of non-consolidated banks seeking the payment of their entitlements if negotiations become unfruitful.

I have to give it to Odunaro, I saw him in front of his tent on TV, it was the third day of his hunger strike and he didn’t look like he was going to give up anytime soon. Nigerians are not known for any form of self suffering, it is just not in our culture, anyway thanks to the Lagos State Government for interceding on the behalf of the grieved people.
