MEMORIES OF GOLDIE HARVEY-ORIRE EKEIFO

How can i forget the day we went clubbing Myself,Denrele,Goldie,Temi and few friends we got to the club, and every1 was staring @ Goldie as she walked down with smiles on their faces, and they all wanted to take pictures with her. How can I ever forget our journey to the HOTFM studio in abuja, and getting there every1 was asking Goldie if I was her manager cause i had a strict look and i was trying to make things fast cause we had another appointment to catch up with elsewhere. Someone took a particular picture of us that day, and i said to Goldie "I be like your manager for this pic oo" she replied saying "E Fit u well well". *smile*          We also had plans on doing radio and club tour in abuja to promote her nawty singles which is making waves now. How can I forget the day Goldie cried cause she was not happy and we were meant to go out that night, and she said she does not feel like going out anymore.  I went close to Goldie and i said "Wipe your tears and 4get what ever has happned if u stay all alone in dis room crying and thinking, u won't 4get whatever is it that is making u sad, let's hang out and have fun and i promise  u will be fine. Next thing, Goldie had a smile on her face and got dressed we went straight to White Nigerian Bush bar for his video premaire and she was all happy and bounced back to the real Miss G i know.                                                          How can I ever forget that very day we all went to silverbird galleria in abuja (Myself,Goldie,JJC,Amena,Temmy and Steve) as we got to the galleria, some group of gals came to goldie hugged her and said "pls can we take a pic, what's ur twitter handle? We love u, pls follow us on twitter etc. She had dis pretty smile on her face and showed love to them all. Goldie never jokes with her fans.                Goldie is also loved by little children we went for a birthday party and all d kids were all over Goldie and they kept on screaming WHAT'S MY NAME and they all wanted an autographed cd from her. It was a wonderful experience.   How can I forget that very day we were hungry especially I in particular, Goldie gave us a special treat we had a lot to drink and eat, we laughed, cracked jokes and had fun all trough.         I was so fond of Goldie that i always make her laugh whenever we are chatting on BBM I even told her that her next single will be Skibobo Pants Filled with Miliki ft Denrele Edun. And we laughed about it. *smile  I have a lot of female celebrity friends and I love them all, but Goldie is one I really love so much, I met her through my very good friend Denrele Edun and she welcomed me into her life with open arms.                          A day b4 she passed on, we had a conversation on hw far ave gone with her radio club and dj promo in abj and I told her all is well and few Radio OAP's needed to be thanked cos they all appreciated her songs on d nawti single album and were glad to promote it. She replied saying "Okay I will once I land lag"  so i knew she was coming bk to nigeria the next day and she will defi get in touch with me. That was the last I heard from Goldie. Goldie touched the life of many of us with her kind of music, if u listen to "I DON'T WANT TO LEAVE" then u will understand what am talking about. Goldie is one lady I admire so much because even with the negative things people say about her, she still moved on and kept on struggling to stay ontop she never gave up.  I will miss u GOLDIE. RIP my friend Oluwabimpe Susan Harvey(GOLDIE) U will 4ever remain in my heart.....Much love ORIRE.           @Orirefreshout

The Secret To Being A Good Artist Manager...Orire Ekeifo

A lot of people have been asking me for tips with regards to Artist Management, some are aspiring managers and some musicians looking for managers.
So I then decided to share the little knowledge I know, through my experiences and what I’ve read written by experts…..

Well here’s my 2 cents worth advice to anyone interested:

*Managing an artist’s career requires interaction with people of all personality types under many pleasant and some unpleasant circumstances
* Among the most challenging can be those times when it is necessary to manage around the ego of another.
* Managing an artist requires patience and understanding of that person’s behaviour and attitude.
* The music business is one where egos thrive, with many trying to be “somebody” or trying to assert that they already are somebody.
* The biggest problem in Managing an artist is when the manager him/herself is arrogant and ego-driven and that’s always the biggest problem in the music industry

Leadership is an important skill of a Manager at the beginning of an Artist’s career or at the beginning of the Artist-manager relationship.
* The influence of an Artist Manager on the early planning and development of an artist’s career is what helps the artist develop a focus and an organised purpose.
* It is important for the manager to keep good relations with Booking Agencies/Promoters and key Media people.
* The higher the demand for an Artist, the easier the job is for the manager.

* THE MOST DIFFICULT ARTIST TO MANAGE, IS ONE WITH NO HIT SINGLE OR BRAND VISIBILITY.

- A hit single that is on high rotation on radio and tv attracts the attention of promoters, meaning the manager no longer makes calls for bookings, they automatically come due to the artist’s popularity and relevance.
- In many occasions, I have been approached by artists with no hit singles or songs that have potential to be hit singles and honestly it has always been a challenge for me because my belief is that a Manager is mostly required when an artist can’t handle all the work on their own.
- I don’t believe in artists being “spoon-fed”!!!

* Networking is key in building an Artist’s career.
* If an Artist Manager, in the music business cannot get a call returned, they are ineffective, so building a network of contacts & relationships early in a career is extremely important.
* To build a network, a manager must be willing to become involved in both the business and social sides of the music industry.
* When an artist has become popular, there are demands on their time that the manager must try to meet because an artist’s career in the music business has a limited shelf life, and there is an urgency to draw as much from it as possible while demand is there
* As a manager, you must always be prepared for business regardless of the time of the day or day of the week; which means as a manager you do not have set office hours with weekends and holidays off or vacation.
* As an Artist Manager you are responsible for the success of every performance an artist makes.
* Being a manager comes with a lot of stress and pressure, with everyone shifting the blame on you when something goes wrong, it is important to keep a calm and be able to absorb all the pressure under any circumstance.
* Attending industry events, award shows, launches is key in order to meet key players who may be helpful in the careers of both the manager and artist.

- For Artist Managers, being social means having a congenial and approachable style that gives the appearance of being comfortable in many casual and business settings
- An allied social skill is to know the appropriate attire for different types of business meetings and events; not every artist manager enjoys social settings, but being part of them is a requirement of the job.
- Communication is key in an Artist Manager’s job, from communicating the artist and business associates.
-Persistence is highly important in being an Artist Manager, avoid being aggressive in getting your artist out there.

REQUIRED SKILLS TO BE A GOOD MANAGER:

* The best managers understand salesmanship and use those skills to create an interest by others in their clients. They use persuasion to influence and motivate industry gatekeepers on behalf of their artists.
* Artist Managers have a good sense of business, and are good at budgeting both time and money.
* An Artist Manager has the necessary technical skills to deal with everyone from the Promoter to the sound technician at an artist’s performance.
* Managers must keep their focus on the artist’s career, and also keep the artist from being distracted by the frustrations that go along with pursuing a competitive, high-rewards career. The artist too must maintain a focus on goals and it is the challenge of the manager to keep them motivated.
* Another important skill is to be able to solve problems, like defusing conflicts, resolving interpersonal issues, finding other ways to get results and being the “go to” person when major components of an event for the artist begin to fall apart.

HARSH REALITIES OF BEING A MANAGER:

* A lot of people will say no and a lot of gatekeepers will seem immovable. When they say “No”, it is not personal to the manager, it simply means you must find a way to get past the gatekeeper or pursue another that is more likely to give you an audience. Another way to get past them is to find someone in your network who can open that door for you.
* If your phone calls are not returned or your emails not acknowledged, it is not personal, it just means you haven’t developed the perception that you offer something that will improve the other person’s business.
* Keeping the spirits of your artists up during a continuing career roller coaster will be draining for you. Understand that the pursuit if opportunities for your artist will include manny rejections due primarily to competition within the industry
* Many will tell you whatever is necessary to get you off the phone or their doorstep if they think you have nothing to contribute to their business. Things like “I’m in a meeting” “I’ll call you back” and they never do, but don’t take it personal
* People will disappoint you, especially those you dependent on
* The agendas of many people in the music business determine whether you matter to them. If you manage a significant artist, they will stumble over each other to get a conversation with you, if you are a former manager if a major artist or artist that’s not popular yet, you might get a lame hello or none at all from music industry people.

TIPS ON BECOMING A GOOD MANAGER:

* Give yourself a good self-assessment by looking at the strengths you have and how you will use those to the best advantage of yourself and your clients.

* Under every circumstance, act and be professional

* Build and maintain a network of contacts, that means calling on your contacts for assistance when you need it but it also means offering help when they don’t expect it.

* The smartest managers recognise that for a genuine growth, a career requires continuous education. Read books!!!!

* Know the business etiquette for the music industry.

* Be prepared for career setbacks and brace yourself for recovery

* Be better than your competing Artist Managers and become known as an expert

* Look successful even though your career is still a work in progress.

What I shared is what motivates me in doing what I do and hopefully it will be of good help to you.

Peace!!!! ORIRE

WHERE DID MY CHILDHOOD GO!

I had the time of my life in the block rosary while growing up, at first I was skeptical going to a place where kids hung out, praying and honouring Mary and learning all there was to learn about the Catholic Church. After a while, it became not only routine but fun and I will always treasure the memories I had in block rosary because that is where I figured myself out. I wanted to be holy, just like in all the stories I had heard about how Mary was holy. I wanted to pray and have enough belief to think that every time I prayed for sick people God was working wonders in their life because I was the one praying for them. I believed that my purity of heart and depthless faith in God had to count for something. I took pride in my knowledge of the bible and the church and I was always eager to hear Fr. Badejo preach during children mass on Sunday.  We did not mind staying out late till 9pm before we got home from block rosary because it was worth it. We were innocent, with great faith and there was nothing that could take away our dreams!
I stopped going to block rosary sometime in Junior Secondary School and I stopped praying and believing, gradually I became a realist and the only thing that kept me going sometimes was my dreams.
Life was easy then; we had no problems or thoughts of tomorrow, we only worried about the size of the eba when we got home from school for lunch, the type of sandals, water bottle and school bags we were going to get for the new term, how many five naira notes we could swindle from our uncles and neighbours, how late we could stay out playing before my mum would spank our butts. Food was the least of my concern because it was always available, money was not an issue because all I needed was N10 for Ghana buns during school break and N5 for banana chewing gum and N1 sweet, we had coke on Sunday and friend plaintian on Saturday, akpu for lunch during the weekdays and on some hated days we had eba, bread for breakfast almost all the time and whatever was available served as dinner. My dad made sure we had the best experiences for Christmas and Easter. Trips to water-park, amusement park, Mr.Biggs etc. and when school resumed we all bragged about all the gifts we got and the things we did during the holiday.
I had dreams, dreams like a mountain; I wanted to do something that would give me the chance to be as pure as Mary. I wanted to play football, but when I had to choose between that and education I picked education, I wanted to travel and see the world, meet new people, explore food that has been unheard of, dance the Masai dance and do the things I figured I would love. I hated music, I dint get the point of a bunch of men with school boy hair styles singing love songs to a non-existent woman. I always said to myself…chima why listen to these British bands when you can be watching a Jackie Chan movie! I loved outdoors, that’s where you could always find me after I had done my home work and had my compulsory siesta of the day. If I wasn’t playing soccer I was playing table tennis, or running around or watching the boys play snooker or arm wrestling. I was always with the boys, I didn’t know how to do girl stuff, like build sand castles, play pretend house, ten-ten and other things girls loved to do. I was always a mess at the end of the day, my mother insisted I wear skirts and they were always ripped and dirty at the end of the each day. I have to say I admire my mum’s tenacity in ensuring that I wore skirts and gown until the end of secondary school.
Christmas was the most magical periods of my life. I got new shoes, new dresses, new sunshades, new N10 notes, a bottle of coke to myself, a big plate of rice and chicken with salad plus a trip to my favourite eateries on boxing day. It didn’t get any better than that! The man who sold records at the beginning of the streets would play Boney M songs all day long, the DJ would organize Father Christmas trips with gifts for each person and my mother was especially lenient during Christmas. Those were the days of adventure and love. Batman was my favourite comic hero. I guess I loved him because he was a man who possessed great powers that were manifested better when he put on his red jump suit. I loved that he was young and took all the right decisions to protect his identity, his aged uncle and aunt and his cute girlfriend. Superman was too good looking with his styled hair and a single lock falling out of place for me to take him serious, all my friends were always trying to imitate him for reason unknown to me. I particularly remember one time when the Landlord’s last son Abayomi tried to do a daring superman move by ‘flying’ from the top of the balcony of the building straight to the ground, miraculously he did not die but he lost a few teeth, got a huge gash in his head, and his face was badly injured during the fall. We laughed at his foolishness for weeks and parents told kids his misfortune as the butt of their jokes. I guess that helped to convince him that superman only existed on TV. After that day none of us tried to be stupid, the highest we ever tried to jump from was a 10 step stair case.
My mum always tried to feed us new food we saw on TV. Sometimes it was a good experiment and sometimes it was horrible. One time she tried to make us cornflakes and she let it soak in hot water to the extent that it was so soggy I threw up right in the valley of my stomach, the rest of the food went to the landlord’s pig house. A good experiment would be when she tried to imitate the Christmas indomie meal that was shown in the Christmas indomie advert, it was such a huge success that all of us went to bed with unsatisfied stomachs that night!
I loved the pig house that my landlord kept. Those animals are the filthiest things I have ever seen in my life. Most of my eba and unfinished food went to them. We loved watching them eat the most rotten food that no living creature could swallow and when we were in a foul mood we poured hot water on them just to hear them scream in a grunt like manner.
I was a smooth fantastic liar; I could literally lie my way out of any situation without blinking. I was so scared of the cane my mum kept for each of us that even if I knew she was going to get me each time, I couldn’t resist lying. We were fearless, we believed that nothing could happen to us, we played soccer with bare feet and bruised knees and jumped fences with scraped assess. It was fun! Life was a round globe with no sharp edges.
I look back now and I realize that my parents went the extra mile to make sure that we had as much of a sheltered life as was possible. All of the things she told us to keep us away from men we later discovered were a fallacy. The innocence I had then is almost gone, my faith in God is not so strong, my black and white view of the world has been tainted with reality and I have problems now. I have to think of a job, my family, marriage, food, accommodation, make up, beauty, etc. Things that I didn’t give a thought to before now occupy my mind. It took me five years to learn how not to worry so much about the future and to live in the present, it took me two years to rebuild my faith in God and every day I learn how to have more hope for the future and cede control of my life to God.
I remember how we used to listen to TLC’s hit track scrubs on our way back from school and use it as our anthem to give no attention to boys because I didn’t think of them as sexual beings but as fungus who laid waste to my path. But that has changed because unconsciously I seek praise of men, I try to impress them and I love to have them as friends. The things I didn’t do as a child I do now, the places I couldn’t enter as a kid I lie in now and the thoughts I gave no space to I breathe in today. I have been forced to grow up faster than my peers and the sights that my eyes have seen I do not wish upon anyone. I do not regret the things I have been unable to achieve because for the first time in a long time trepidation, regret, fear and hopelessness has been replaced with faith, love, contentment, hope and an abounding peace that everything in my life is at it should be.
Sometimes I wish I could have my child hood back, I wish my mother would wrap me in the cocoon warmth of her arms when I am having a bad dream as she lets me sleep with her and my dad, I wish that she could rub soothing oils on my body when I have a fever, pray with me when am restless and watch over me like a mother hawk. I miss not having to think about the future, I miss waiting for channels TV to open cartoons at 4pm, I miss 50 kobo sprint chewing gum and N1 candy, I miss N5 Ghana buns and Mrs Okoro’s N10 rice, I miss it so bad sometimes that I cry for the greatest childhood I could have been blessed with, But that is life I guess. Change must happen; good or bad it is a constant. Decisions must be taken whether we want to or not. No matter how far I go or how great I become the memories of my childhood, all the things I saw and did to bring me to this spot where I am at 23 years of age….. I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER.

THE GAME OF TWO GREATS (MAN UTD VS REAL MADRID)

Today's game at old trafford has been billed as the greatest game yet to be held in 2013 so far between two of football's greatest managers still active in the game, Jose Mourinho and Sir Alex Ferguson. Both of them with different tactics, personalities, style and in two different countries but if there is one things these unusual friends have in common it is the desire not just to win, but to win it all all the time every season!

Both managers will be leaving nothing to chance in this battle of tactics, ego and the chance to progress to the next stage of the champions league.
Mourinho's men will be brimming with confidence after knocking Barcelona out in style during last mid-week's Copa Del Rey Semi-final match and repeating the same victory on an early saturday kick off. Both games will ensure that Los Blancos come into this tie brimming with confidence and rearing to go especially after resting key figures like Ronaldo and Ozil (pictured above) who both will be needed to produce their best form in today's encounter if Madrid is to get anything from this game.

Manchester United will not be left without threat with the formidable partnership between wazza and Van Persie set to partner in attack today. The united warriors will want to prove that today's team lining up in front of the old trafford faithfuls is totally different from the team that received a trashing at the hands of Madrid in the 2003 quarter final exit that saw Ronaldo de Lima run riot in that round.
PREVIOUS MEETINGS BETWEEN BOTH CLUBS
1957 European Cup semi-final
First leg: April 11, 1957: Real Madrid 3 Manchester United 1
Second leg: April 24, 1957: Manchester United 2 Real Madrid 2

1968 European Cup semi-final
First leg: April 24, 1968: Manchester United 1 Real Madrid 0
Second leg: May 15, 1968: Real Madrid 3 Manchester United 3

2000 Champions League quarter-final
First leg: April 4, 2000: Real Madrid 0 Manchester United 0
Second leg: April 19, 2000: Manchester United 2 Real Madrid 3

2003 Champions League quarter-final
First leg: April 8, 2003: Real Madrid 3 Manchester United 1
Second leg: April 23, 2003: Manchester United 4 Real Madrid 3

THREATS AND POSSIBLE LINE UPS
Los Blancos
The possible line up for the Madrid side could include the same team that faced Manchester united in the first leg.
Diego Lopez, Fabio Coentrao, Raphael Varane, Sergio Ramos, Alvaro Arbeloa, Xabi Alonso, Sami khedira, Mesut Ozil, Angel Di Maria, Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema
Mourinho would probably not want to risk playing Iker Casillas who is just returning from injury for a dicey encounter like this. The threats for this madrid team is everyone, because they have such a lethal team that spring surprises week in week out. Varane and Ramos are both very good from set pieces, the full backs will want to spend more time in the united half of the pitch and Alonso will be the man sailing the ship from deep.  Ronaldo will be the main focus of this game as he makes an emotional return to the stadium where he made a name for himself and Ozil will have to be in tip top shape to be able to pick those famous thru passes to Benzema and Ronaldo in that united box.
Red Devils
David De Gea, Rafael, Johhny Evans, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, Tom Cleverly, Michael Carrick, Nani, Antonio Valencia, Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie
Nani, Valencia, Cleverly and Evans could find their way back in this game. The threats from both sides will come from the wings with both teams being tactical to catch the other on the counter. The midfield battle between Xabi Alonso and Michael Carrick will definitely be an interesting one to see who comes out on top at the end of this game. RVP will be seeking to redeem himself after missing out on some glaring chances during the first leg of the game in Madrid while Di Maria will want to make more of an impact than he did in the first leg.
This game has all the makings of an epic football encounter; the best strikers in the EPL, the best winger in the world, the best coaches in the world all in one pitch looking the same things, a win that will see them closer to glory at Wembley. The world like Mourinho said will pause with uneasy breath to watch this game.
